Louisville, Ky. -
Louisville forward Monique Reid and guard Tia Gibbs have been granted a medical hardship waiver by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday afternoon and will be eligible to compete for the Louisville women's basketball team next season.
"We are extremely excited to have Tia and Monique back next year," head coach Jeff Walz said. "They both have worked very hard throughout the rehab process and have maintained a positive attitude in their recovery. We are anticipating them both back at the beginning of the season and look forward to a healthy and prosperous 2012-13 campaign. There is no doubt they will add great skill and leadership to our already experienced line-up."
Reid suffered an osteochondral injury to her left knee in the second half of the Cards' BIG EAST opener against Cincinnati on Dec. 14. She had surgery to repair the damage on Jan. 4. Reid saw action in eight games last season and was the team's leading scorer heading into the Cincinnati game. She was a preseason first team All-BIG EAST selection and also named to the Wade Watch List in the fall. Reid was averaging 13.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game before she season ending injury. She has led the Cardinals in scoring and rebounding the last two seasons and has been a first team All-BIG EAST selection during the 2010-11 season.
Gibbs suffered a shoulder injury four minutes into the Cards' season opener against Missouri State. The injury forced Gibbs to miss the entire season. She was expected to be a major contributor to the Cardinals last season. Gibbs started every game for the Cardinals during the 2010-11 season, averaging 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. She led the team in steals with 95 on the year.
Gibbs graduated on Saturday from the Business School while Reid is expected to graduate in August with a degree in physical education.
