Louisville, Ky. - Freshman forward Gwen Rucker will play volleyball during the 2009 season while redshirting during the 2009-10 women's basketball season. Rucker was a starter for both the Louisville volleyball and women's basketball teams this past season, helping lead both to NCAA tournament play.

"We are pleased that Gwen will be afforded the opportunity to redshirt next season and immerse herself solely into one sport," said head coach Jeff Walz. "Our intentions were to transition her into basketball next fall, but with the injury to Chauntise Wright, Gwen was pressed into duty with very little preparation. She did an amazing job of playing and starting in two Top 20 programs, which is a testament to her character, work ethic and adaptability. We are very excited about her future contributions and have enjoyed having her as a part of our basketball family."

Rucker saw action in 32 games for the Cardinals, starting in the final 27 games. She finished the year averaging three points and 2.1 rebounds per game. She was second on the team from the foul line, connecting on 80 percent. Rucker played in 28 matches for the volleyball team. She finished the year second on the team in blocking with 1.09 blocks per game.
