The No. 7-seeded Cardinals (22-9) will face 10th-seed Michigan State Spartans (20-11) in the first round of NCAA Tournament in the Raleigh Region on Saturday, March 17 at approximately 1:45 p.m. ET in a game televised on ESPN2 at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md.
Louisville is making its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance and sixth appearance in the last seven years. U of L enters the tournament having won six of its last nine games, falling 63-53 to No. 7 Notre Dame in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship. The Cardinals have reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in three of the past four seasons. U of L made its first NCAA Final Four appearance in 2009, falling to UConn 76-54 in the title game.
Michigan State is making its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance and the fourth straight appearance and ninth time in the last 10 years. The Spartans have won eight of their last 10 games, and finished in a tie for second in the Big Ten Conference. Michigan State has compiled a record of 15-11 in its previous NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 9-1 record in the first round. The Spartans have advanced out of the first round in each of their last seven appearances, including a trip to the National Championship game in 2005 and Sweet 16 appearance in 2006 and 2009.
Michigan State leads the series 1-0 over Louisville. Michigan State defeated the Cardinals 82-73 on Nov. 25, 1990 in the only meeting between the two teams.
The game will be aired live on U of L Radio Network (WKRD 790 AM) with Matt Andrews and Adrienne Johnson calling the action.
