Louisville, Ky. - Louisville juniors Shoni Schimmel and Antonita Slaughter earned league honors as the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Regular Season Awards were announced on Thursday afternoon. Schimmel was named to the first team for the second consecutive year while Slaughter was named to the second team for the first time.
Schimmel leads the Cardinals in scoring and assists with 13.7 points and 3.7 assists per game. She also ranks second on the team in free throw percentage, shooting 80 percent. Schimmel earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after scoring a career-high 38 points against South Florida. She finished league play averaging 15.8 points and 3.5 assists per game. She was also a preseason All-BIG EAST first team selection and is on the Wade Watch midseason list.
Slaughter ranks third on the team in scoring overall with 10.2 points per game and second on the team in league scoring with 13.3 points per game. She ranks second on the team in rebounding with 5.1 boards per game and leads the team from behind the arc, shooting 36.2 percent. She has scored double figures in 16 of the last 18 games. She earned her first BIG EAST Player of the Week award on Jan. 28.
The BIG EAST Tournament begins on Friday, March 8 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The Cardinals earned a double bye and will begin play on Sunday, March 10 at noon. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
