Louisville, Ky. - Sophomore Shoni Schimmel and freshman Bria Smith earned league honors as the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Regular Season Awards were announced on Thursday afternoon. Schimmel earned first team All-BIG EAST honors while Smith was a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman team.

Schimmel earns first team honors after earning honorable mention honors as a freshman last season. The sophomore guard leads the Cardinals in scoring, assists, and steals with 14.0 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. She also ranks fourth on the team in rebounding with 4.2 boards per game. Schimmel was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll three times this season. She finished league play ranked 11th in the in scoring, sixth in assists, and fourth in steals. She was also a preseason All-BIG EAST first team selection.

Smith is the second consecutive unanimous selection to the All-Freshman team after Schimmel earned the honors last season. She is one of four unanimous selections to the All-Freshman team. Smith ranks third on the team in scoring (9.4 ppg), third on the team in rebounding (4.3 rpg) and second on the team in steals (1.9 spg) after starting every game for the Cardinals. She leads the team in free throws, getting to the line 84 times this season while shooting 70 percent.

Louisville will begin BIG EAST Tournament play on Saturday, March 3 at 6:00 p.m.. They will face the winner of the Villanova/Seton Hall game.
