Women's Basketball Falls at Central Michigan 84-75

Mt. Pleasant, Mich. - The Louisville women's basketball team fell 84-75 at Central Michigan 84-75 on Wednesday night. Becky Burke led four Cardinals in double figures with 18 points. Monique Reid added 16 points and Laura Terry and Chauntise Wright added 10 points. Shonda Long led Central Michigan with 29 points while Britni Houghton finished with 28.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the first four minutes of play. The Chippewas tied the game at 17 when Long hit a 3-pointer at the 10:31 mark. CMU's Long nailed another 3-pointer on the next possession to give the Chippewa's their largest lead at 20-17.

Wright converted on a three point play to tie the game at 25. The lead changed hands again before Terry hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cardinals a 33-30 lead with just over three minutes in the half. The Chippewas tied the game at 33 with 15 second remaining. Then Keshia Hines scored in the paint in the final seconds to give the Cardinals a 35-33 lead at the break.

The Cardinals started the second half on a 5-0 run to take a 40-36. Houghton hit two free throws to take a 51-50 lead. But Burke stepped up and nailed a 3-pointer on the next possession to give the Cardinals a 53-51 lead with 10:46 remaining.

Following Burke's shot the game was halted when the fire alarm went off and Rose Arena had to be evacuated. The game was delayed by 20 minutes before it was resumed.

The Chippewas used a 7-4 run after the game resumed to take a 58-57 lead with 7:50 remaining. Reid hit two foul shots to give the Cardinals the lead at 59-58 but the Chippewas responded with an easy bucket on the next possession to take the lead again. Burke nailed a trey on the next possession to give Louisville the lead.

The lead changed hands several times before Central Michigan went on an 13-3 run to take a 75-67 lead capped by three 3-pointers by Long. The Chippewas hit their foul shots down the stretch to secure the win.

Louisville finished the game shooting 33.3 percent while Central Michigan shot 42.4 percent. Louisville outrebounded Central Michigan 53-39.

The Cardinal will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 6 as they host Utah in Freedom Hall at 2:00 p.m. The game is Pallas Partners Showdown - Pack the House and fans can pick up vouchers at local Rallys locations for $2 admittance. The Cardinals will also unveil their 2009 NCAA Runner-Up Banner.
