HARTFORD, Conn. - Shoni Schimmel and Antonita Slaughter scored 16 points as No. 17/20 Louisville (22-9) fell to No. 18/21 St. John's (22-8) in overtime on Sunday in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals. Shenneika Smith led St. John's with 24 points. Nadirah McKenith added 15 points for the Red Storm.
St. John's went 8 of 10 from the line in the overtime period to outscore Louisville 12-5 for the win. Louisville finished with just two free throws and a late 3-pointer by Shoni Schimmel in the extra period.
Louisville finished the game shooting 31.9 percent from the field and 37 percent from behind the arc. St. John's finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from behind the arc. The Cardinals outrebounded the Red Storm 52-38.
St. John's started the second half with a 9-1 run to take 34-25 lead at the 14:52 mark. A Schimmel layup at the 14 minute mark ended the drought for the Cardinals. The Red Storm kept the nine point with 11 minutes remaining in the half.
Louisville used a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 40-37 with nine minutes remaining. Burke hit three-pointer to cut the lead to two but the Red Storm with a 5-0 run to push the lead back to seven with eight minutes remaining. Louisville would cut it to two a few more times but Slaughter's three-pointer tied the game at 54 with 3:21 left. St. John's scored on the next possession but Slaughter hit a jumper to tie the game up at 56 and neither team was able to score the game-winner in regulation.
A back and forth first half saw St. John's take a 25-24 lead at the break. Louisville finished the first half shooting 29 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from behind the arc. St. John's shot 40 percent in the field half and 57.1 percent from long range.
Louisville will now wait for NCAA Selection Show on Monday, March 12.
