HARTFORD, Conn. - Shoni Schimmel scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half and No. 20/17 Louisville(22-8) beat Villanova (17-14) 63-47 on Saturday night in the second round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Asia Taylor scored all of her 13 points in the second half while Becky Burke added 10 for the Cardinals. Laura Sweeney had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.
Louisville started the second half with a 9-2 run, taking a 38-31 lead at the 16:38 mark. After a basket by Villanova on the next possession, Louisville went on a 22-8 run over the next 13 minutes to take control. Taylor got the burst started with back-to-back layups. Then Shawnta' Dyer took over scoring seven of her nine points during the spurt. Bria Smith capped the run with a 3-pointer that made it 60-41 with 3:53 left.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from behind the arc. Villanova finished the game shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from behind the arc. Louisville finished with a 38-29 advantage on the boards.
A back and forth first half saw Villanova take a 29-26 late lead. After the Wildcats committed a foul with 2.9 seconds left, Schimmel hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 29.
Louisville finished the first half shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the arc. Villanova finished the half shooting 34.5 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from behind the arc. Louisville held a 19-17 rebounding edge in the first half.
