The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated Marquette 77-61 in Freedom Hall on Tuesday evening. The Cardinals had three players finish in double figures, led by Monique Reid with 26 points, a career-tying 15 rebounds and a career-high five blocks. Becky Burke contributed 19 points and Asia Taylor had the best game of her career with career-highs in points and rebounds, with 14 points and eight rebounds. Louisvile improves to 12-14 overall and 4-9 in the BIG EAST.
Marquette falls to 14-11 overall and 5-7 in the BIG EAST. The Golden Eagles finished with three players in double figures led by Angel Robinsonwith 15 points. Jessica Pachko added 13 points and Tatiyiana McMorris finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Cardinals and the Golden Eagles both started out the game flat on the offensive side of the ball going two minutes into the game before McMorris scored at the 17:56 mark. Louisville jumped out to an 11-5 lead with 15:01 in the half capping a 9-0 run with a Burke 3-pointer. The Golden Eagles went almost three and a half minutes without scoring until Pachko ended the drought at the 13:42 mark.
After the Burke 3-pointer, Louisville went five and a half minutes without scoring, as Marquette went on a 10-0 run, building a 15-11 lead until Reid scored on an offensive put-back with 9:32 remaining in the half.
After a timeout with 7:42 remaining in the half, the Cardinals went on a 14-3 run to take a 27-22 lead with 4:41 remaining. Marquette was able to tie the score up at 27 off a layup from Robinson at the 3:08 mark. The teams continued to trade baskets the rest of the way in the half. Two quick baskets by Brandie Radde put the Cards up 35-31 with six seconds left in the half, but a half-court heave from McMorris cut the lead to 35-34 at the beak.
Louisville finished the half shooting 48.0 percent from the floor, while Marquette shot 39.4 percent. The Cardinals outrebounded the Golden Eagles 20-15 in the half. Reid finished the first half with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals came out in the second half with quick scoring from Burke, who scored five points in the first minute of the half. After a basket from Robinson at the 18:45 mark, Louisville went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 49-38 with 15:34 remaining, the largest lead for the Cardinals at that point. The the Golden Eagles then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 49-44 at the 12:22 mark, until Keshia Hines scored on a layup at the 10:24 mark.
Marquette kept the score within seven for most of the half until the Cardinals finally were able to get a run that put the game out of reach for the Golden Eagles. Louisville scored at the 3:08 mark off a layup from Taylor that made the score 67-59. Taylor's layup sparked a 10-0 run eventually putting the game out of reach. The Cardinals held the Golden Eagles scoreless for almost the entire final three minutes of the game with the final score 77-61, the largest lead of the game for the Cardinals.
Louisville finished the game shooting a season-high 56.5 percent from the floor, while Marquette shot 36.7 percent. The Cardinals outrebounded the Golden Eagles 35-27. Louisville tied their season-high in blocks with seven in the game and five coming from Reid alone.
The Cardinals will be back in action at Seton Hall on Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
