LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville track and field/cross country signee Cory Thorne ran to a 26th-place finish at the prestigious Foot Locker Cross Country National Finals on Dec. 11 in San Diego, Calif.
Thorne, who signed with U of L earlier this fall and is slated to be a freshman for the Cardinals in the fall of 2005, covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 16:09. The Portsmouth (N.H.) High School senior qualified for the national championship race for the second straight year after finishing second in the Northeast Region championship on Nov. 27.
"It was a good showing for Cory despite being hampered by the stomach flu during the race," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "The weather and humidity in San Diego also weren't really what he was accustomed to in New Hampshire leading up to the race, but he competed very well through all of it. We're very excited about what he brings to our program."
Thorne is the first two-time qualifier for the Foot Locker National Championships to ever sign with the U of L cross country/track and field program. Over the last two years, Thorne has been among the nation's best preps in both cross country and the distance events in track. In October alone, he won his third straight Class L state title, placed second at the Meet of Champions, and then won the New England championship.
"To have an athlete of Cory's stature coming into our program as we move towards the Big East Conference in 2005 is a big thing for us," Mann said. "He's the caliber of runner we're looking for in order to move the Louisville track and field program in the direction we want."
