LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Following an outstanding performance at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. this past weekend, University of Louisville redshirt senior Cory Thorne earned BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors on Thursday.
Thorne, an All-American in 2007, was the first Cardinal to cross the finish line as he navigated the 8,000-meter course in 24:14.8 to finish 30th out of 237 competitors. His placement secured ninth place for Louisville in the white race, topping 26 other squads. U of L finished with 298 total points, just one shy of eighth overall and ahead of then no. 18 Iowa State and no. 30 Minnesota who took 10th and 11th, respectively.
For their efforts, Louisville made their debut at no. 25 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association Top 30 poll earlier this week with 74 points, giving the BIG EAST 11 total teams in the men's and women's national rankings.
The BIG EAST selects one male and one female runner each week for the award based on individual efforts each week of the season.
Following a week off, the Cards will head to the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31 in Kenosha, Wisc.
