LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams will return from a week away from competition at the Greater Louisville Classic (GLC) on Saturday morning at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. The event, hosted by the Greater Louisville Sports Commission, will serve as the Cards' only home event in 2008.
The racing action for the Cards will begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. ET, with the men's gold race and will continue with the women's gold race at 10:15 a.m. There will also be a men's blue race at 11 a.m., and a women's blue race at 11:45 a.m. The men's races will be 8,000 meters in length, while the women's races will be 5,000 meters.
A total of 65 collegiate teams from 15 states are entered in the event. Highlighting the men's field of teams will be the Cards, the 2006 and 2007 GLC champions, while the Cards (2007 runner-up), Vanderbilt and Texas highlight the field of women's teams.
"We're excited to compete on a course we know very well and to do so in front of our home fans," said Cards' head coach Brice Allen. "It's not only important to us to perform well at home, but it's also important for us to continue to improve and prepare for upcoming championship season."
The Cards enter the GLC following a sweep of the team and individual titles in both the men's and women's races at the Winthrop Invitational on Sept. 20. Junior Tarah McKay won her second straight individual title to lead the Louisville women to another race title, while junior Scott McClain won his second straight title to lead the Cardinal men to a second straight win. The Cards also swept the team and individual titles at the Mid-America Opener on Aug. 30 in Evansville, Ind.
Following this week's event in Louisville, the Cards will have a week off from racing before returning to competition on Oct. 18 at the Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
