LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
The NCAA Track & Field Subcommittee has announced that the new date formula for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships passed by NCAA Championships Cabinet will go into effect beginning this year.
For the first time since World War II, the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be held on a Saturday, taking place at E.P. `Tom' Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 17. In addition, the formula places the regional championships preceding the national meet eight days prior on a Friday, with all Division I meets being held on Nov. 9. The Pre-Nationals meet in Louisville is scheduled to take place on Oct. 13.
The new date formula prescribes that the national meet be held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, matching what has been done in Division II and Division III for several years. By virtue of the calendar having the earliest possible Thanksgiving in 2012 (Nov. 22), the meet will be the earliest in Division I history.
Since the first NCAA cross country championships in 1938, the Division I meet had been held on the Monday prior to or immediately following the Thanksgiving holiday. The exceptions were during World War II when the meet was held on a Saturday (the earliest being Nov. 21). In 1963, the meet was held on a Tuesday, delayed due to the assassination of President Kennedy.
The University of Louisville and the city of Louisville will be first time hosts of the NCAA Division I Championships in 2012. The city previously played host to the 2010 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships and the Division I Southeast Region five of the last six years, including 2011.
In 2013 (Saturday, Nov. 23), the NCAA Division I meet returns to Terre Haute, Ind., the site of the meet for nine of the last 10 years, including 2011. In 2012, Terre Haute will play host to the NCAA Division III Championships.
Five of nine NCAA Regional Championships sites are set for 2012.
