LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A pair of all-Region performers in Michael Eaton and Matt Hughes propelled the 20th-ranked University of Louisville men's cross country team to a fifth-place showing at the NCAA Southeast Regional on a sunny Saturday afternoon at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.
Navigating the 10,000-meter course in 30:20.02, Eaton earned his fourth career all-Region honor with a fourth-place finish. Less than a minute behind was Hughes, who crossed the finish line 30:50.97 to take 13th place out of 231 competitors. The honor is the first of Hughes' career.
"I felt that our upperclassmen ran well and represented Louisville well today," cross country head coach Brice Allen says. "We accomplished our goal by staying healthy, and I'm confident the men will move on to the national championship with the win over Virginia [sixth-place finish]."
The top-two finishing teams at each of the nine regionals earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and the NCAA Division I Track & Field Subcommittee will announce the remaining 13 at-large team selections on Sunday, Nov. 14.
True freshmen Tyler Byrne (39th) and Ryan Eaton (62nd) also put together notable performances in the team's first 10K race of the season. Byrne was the team's third placewinner, completing the course in 31:46.4, while Lovelace and Eaton rounded out the top five for the men.
"Tyler and Ryan deserve praise," Allen comments. "Those two guys are putting together great freshmen campaigns for us. Ryan ran really well today, and Tyler has been a solid No. 3 man. I have a very optimistic future for those two."
On the women's side, Kim Grieshaber earned all-Region honors for the first time in her career with a 21st-place showing in the women's 6K to lead the group to a 13th-place finish. She completed the course in 21:02.8, more than a minute improvement from her 6K time at the BIG EAST Championships (22:40.8). Trailing her by less than 20 seconds was Emily Borsare, who took 28th with a time of 21:18.4. Monica Hernandez (68th), Cassie Martin (144th) and Ariel Briggs (162nd) rounded out the group's top-five finishers.
"I think it's great to have three all-region runners in Kim, Michael and Matt," Allen adds. "I think as we move ahead for the national championship, though, we have to work on becoming more aggressive around the second and third mile."
Next on the schedule is the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, held in Terre Haute, Ind., which will take place on Nov. 22 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. The women's 6K will begin at 12:08 p.m. ET, with the men's 10K to follow at 12:48 p.m.
