EVANSVILLE, Ind. - For the second straight season, the University of Louisville men's cross country team opened the season by sweeping the individual and team titles at the Mid-America Opener on Saturday at the University of Evansville Cross Country Course.

The Cards had the top seven collegiate finishers to score 19 points and earn back-to-back dominating wins at the season-opening event. The host Purple Aces were second with 76 points, followed by Lipscomb and Austin Peay with 85 points each.

Leading the way for the Louisville men was junior Scott McClain, who earned his first career race win covering the 6,000-meter course in a time of 18 minutes, 12.11 seconds. Fellow junior Matt Smith was second among collegiate runners and third overall in the field of 79 with a time of 18:25.58, while freshman Luke Lovelace was fourth with a time of 18:29.22. Another freshman, Gordon Dooley was fifth at 18:30.67, while first-year Cardinal Chase Violet was the Cards' final scorer in sixth with a time of 18:42.09.

On the women's side, the Cards had five of the top eight finishers to score 18 points for back-to-back team titles at the event. Murray State was second with 65 points, followed by Lipscomb with 85 points and Austin Peay with 106 points.

Leading the way for the Cards was junior Tarah McKay, who earned her second straight win at the Mid-America Opener after covering the 4,000-meter course in a course-record time of 14:27.59. McKay now has four career cross country race titles and she has been the Cards' top finisher in all 14 career races in the Louisville uniform.

Sophomore Emily Borsare opened her season in strong fashion with a second-place finish and a time of 14:48.55, while junior Kim Grieshaber was third with a time of 15:03.43. Junior Kat Alcorn was fourth with a time of 15:15.14, while junior Kortni Dukes closed the scoring for Louisville in eighth with a time of 15:25.47.

"You can't start the season much better than two team wins and two individual wins," said Cards' head coach Brice Allen. "I'm excited about Tarah's performance today with that course record and about Scott's strong race. This was a good preparatory meet for us as we move forward to the Winthrop Invitational in three weeks and the Greater Louisville Classic next month. The team is definitely starting to come together."

Following two weeks off from competition, the Cards will return to action on Sept. 20 at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.
