GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Louisville junior Matt Hughes set the tone for the Cardinals on the final day of competition at the 2010 NCAA East Regional Track and Field Meet hosted by North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Hughes, a junior from Oshawa, Ont., broke the school-record in the men's 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:34.87 to place first out of 47 competitors. That time is the fastest in the NCAA this season. Hughes has been near the top of the NCAA in the event all season and will travel to Eugene, Ore. to compete for the NCAA National Championship June 9-12.

Hughes was not the only Cardinal to have a great final day at the regional meet.

Junior D'Ana McCarty placed ninth in the women's discus with a throw of 170-0 (51.82m) to advance to the NCAA National Championship. McCarty, an Indianapolis, Ind. native, will also compete in the hammer throw at the national championships. Teammate Jere' Summers, who had the best throw in the discus in the nation coming into this weekend's meet, fouled on all three of her attempts. Summers will compete in Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA National Championship in the hammer throw.

Also advancing to the NCAA Championships for the Cardinals on Saturday was senior Andre Black. Black, the 2007 indoor national champion in the triple jump, placed fourth out of 48 competitors in the men's triple jump with a leap of 52-11.50 (16.14m). The mark was Black's best of the season and the fifth-best in school history.

The Cards will have a week off to prepare for the 2010 NCAA National Championships on June 9-12 which will be held in Eugene, Ore. at the University of Oregon. There will be seven Cardinals competing for national championships in Eugene. Competing for the Cardinal women will be junior D'Ana McCarty (hammer throw, discus); seniors Jere' Summers and Lindsey Cook (hammer throw) and sophomore Charachesicia Lockhart (long jump). Competing for the Cardinal men will be senior Tone Belt (long jump); senior Andre Black (triple jump) and junior Matt Hughes (3,000m steeplechase).
