LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
The University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams completed day two of the Alabama Relays on Saturday evening at the Sam Bailey Track & Field Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with 17 top-five finishes, including three victories.
On the women's side, Monica Hernandez and Charachesicia Lockhart won their respective events.
Hernandez, a senior transfer, ran her first outdoor race for the Cardinals on Saturday, taking first in the 3,000m steeplechase in a school-record time of 10:53.80, nearly more than six seconds ahead of the runner-up. Lockhart took a victory in the long jump, registering a leap of 6.29m/20-7.75. Rachel Gehret and Kim Cardeiro also earned top-10 finishes in the event, with Gehret placing fourth (5.96m/19-6.75) and Cardeiro placing seventh (5.69m/18-8).
Andrea Sabbatine and Chelsea Lucas had strong showings in the jumps group as well, as they placed third and fifth, respectively, in the pole vault. Sabbatine cleared 3.85m/12-7.5, while Lucas surpassed 3.50m/11-5.75. In the women's high jump, Gehret took second behind an unattached competitor after leaping over 1.70m/5-7, while Megan Schubert placed fourth (1.65m/5-5), and Maggie Gilbertson had a sixth-place showing (1.60m/5-3).
The women throwers continued their success from the opening day of competition. Amashi Kendall had a pair of top-10 performances, placing second in the shot put (14.98m/49-1.75) and sixth in the discus (44.66m/146-06). D'Ana McCarty (second; 49.48m/162-04) and Khadija Abdullah (fifth; 45.06m/147-10) also earned top-10 finishes in the discus.
On the men's side, Mattias Wolter, a highly touted freshman who did not compete during the indoor season, won the 5,000m race by nearly three seconds, posting a time of 14:54.75. Freshman Tyler Byrne commenced his outdoor career as well, placing seventh in the 1,500m, with a time of 3:57.33.
In the sprint events, Jordon Frazier took fourth in the 400m hurdles, clocking a time of 53.90, while Marcellus Hobbs, who also competed in the 200m, tied for fourth in the 400m, crossing the finish line in 49.10.
Seon Powell rounded out the top-15 performances, placing fourth in the long jump, with a mark of 6.91m/22-8.
Louisville concludes the Alabama Relays on Sunday, March 27, at the Sam Bailey Track & Field Complex. Competition for the Cardinals begins at 8 a.m., with the men's hammer throw.
