LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Edwin Kibichiy clocked a top-five school mark, and the University of Louisville track and field teams registered nine top-five finishes on Saturday on the final day of the Meyo Invitational in the Loftus Sport Center in South Bend, Ind.
Against a field that included the 2012 NCAA cross country individual champion, Texas Tech’s Kennedy Kithuka, the Cardinals’ Kibichiy finished the 3,000m race in 8:08.70. The time, a season best, ranks as the fifth-fastest mark in school history and is listed as a top-30 national mark. Classmate Ernest Kibet took fourth in the race also behind a season-best time, finishing in 8:12.01.
Sprinters Calvin Arsenault and Margret Harris, after advancing to the finals in their respective races, each recorded top-five showings. Arsenault took fourth in the 60m hurdles, and helped guide the men’s 4x400m relay team to a season-best mark of 3:17.30, which likely will rank in the top five in the conference. Harris took second in the 60m and also had a runner-up finish in the 200m. Coming into the weekend, Harris ranked 12th in the 60m with a personal-best 7.38.
In the field events, the Cardinals’ throwers combined for six top-10 finishes in the shot put. Khadija Abdullah led a 2-4-5 finish in the women’s shot put, while Brad Vivace led three men’s throwers with a fifth-place finish in the event. In the high jump, Chrisjaan Smith finished second.
Next on the schedule for the Cardinals is the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. Currently, Louisville boasts 30 qualifying marks on the men’s side and 24 on the women’s side. The event, which will be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, runs from Feb. 16-17.
