LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field teams opened the first day of the Kentucky Invitational in impressive fashion, collecting three event titles out of five events Friday evening at E.J. Nutter Field House in Lexington.
Michael Edwards continued his strong start to the indoor season, clearing 2.14m/7-0.25 for his second-straight victory in the high jump. Last week, the redshirt junior jumped over the bar, which was set at 2.20m/7-2.50, for the third-best mark nationally. It ranked No. 3 in the school's indoor record book. Freshman Taylor Caldwell also had a positive showing in the event, placing third by clearing 2.04m/6-8.25.
In the only men's throwing event of the day, Sam Bombaugh and Brad Vivace placed second and third, respectively, in the weight throw. Bombaugh's mark of 18.44m/60-6 was only second to an unattached post-collegiate competitor, while Vivace set a collegiate best on a toss of 18.05m/59-2.75.
On the women's side, Amashi Kendall and Charachesicia Lockhart picked up victories in their respective events. Kendall built on her solid mark in the weight throw last week by heaving the weight 19.46m/60-6 for a first-place finish. Lockhart's leap of 6.12m/20-1 was tops in the long jump by nearly a foot, with the runner-up reaching 5.90m/19-4.25.
"I think Sam Bombaugh, Brad Vivace, Amashi and Charachesicia really had standout performances tonight," associate head coach Dale Cowper said. "As a whole, we made solid progress and it's a good start to the weekend, but we still need to execute better mentally in some areas mentally. Hopefully the crew tomorrow can build off of that."
Patrice Gates (weight throw) and
Margret Harris (long jump) also had notable finishes, placing third and fifth, respectively.
The Cardinals continue competition at the Kentucky Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Nutter Field House. The Louisville women open the day at 10:30 a.m. with the high jump and triple jump events.
