University of Louisville men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma has announced that Bradley Merchant will join the Cardinals in the fall of 2010.

"I am happy to add Bradley Merchant to this recruiting class," said Ecarma. "I feel with our commitments they can be a Top 25 class of recruits. Brad has a great attitude as well and has shown great desire to be a successful college player at U of L. He is a good athlete and is extremely coachable. He is a player that will make every practice better and will represent the university with class. I consider him a sleeper recruit and hopefully a some time down the road other coaches will be kicking themselves on why they didn't recruit this guy harder. He comes from a nice family which fits our program because we have a great foundation of loving and supportive family members."

Merchant, a native of Lexington, Ky., plays for Henry Clay High School where he was a 2009 Kentucky State semifinalist. He won the 2009 Springhurst New Years Classic and advanced to the third round of the Winter Southern USA Closed Championships.

"Brad reminds me a lot of a former U of L tennis standout, Mark Kennedy," said Ecarma. "Mark was not rated among the top players in his section or even state. His pre-college success was limited but with his persistence, drive, and coachability became legendary. Mark developed into a nationally ranked doubles player for us and defeated the #5 ranked doubles team in the country his senior year. He also helped us advance in the NCAA tournament for the first time and was undefeated in the postseason that year. He will go down as one of that great development and improvement stories of our program."
