LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - University of Louisville men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma has announced that Colton Buffington has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his playing career with the Cardinals starting in the 2012-13 season.
"I am so pleased Colton chose Louisville to spend his collegiate career," said Ecarma. "He is a hard-working athlete who enjoys being challenged in training."
Buffington, a native of Cleveland, Ohio plays at Westlake High School where he is a three-time state qualifier and the 2011 District Champion. He is a two time All-State selection, a three-time All-Section and SWC Champion. The two-time team MVP finished third in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Championship in 2009.
Buffington is currently ranking No. 78 in the nation and has wins over four players ranked in the top 50. He was a quarterfinalist in the Midwest Designated Tournaments in New Berlin, Mich., and Kalamazoo, Mich., and reached the consolation quarterfinals of the United States Tennis Association National Open in Toledo, Ohio.
"I believe that even though he is nationally ranked #78, Colton is a `sleeper-type' of recruit," said Ecarma. "He comes from a very supportive family. He has a couple of good coaches working with him - one of whom was a tennis All-American at Ohio State. Colton is also a good doubles player which is a great need on our team. He had a short recruiting trip to us but felt at home right away. He fits the Louisville system."
