KALAMAZOO, Mich. - - University of Louisville incoming freshmen Austin Siegel and Alex Gornet posted impressive results at the United States Tennis Association Junior National Championships. Siegel advanced to the round of 16 in singles and doubles while Gornet reached the round of 64 in the singles field of 256 and doubles field of 128.
Siegel paired with Jordan Daigle to comprise the tournament's fifth-seeded doubles team. The duo received a first round bye and went on to beat Richard Del Nunzio and Joshua Yablon 7-6 4-6 1-0 in the second round. In the third round, they defeated Mihar Kumar and Jason Brown 6-3 7-5 to reach the round of 16. The duo lost in the fourth round to Spencer Papa and Stefan Kozlov 6-0, 7-6.
After a first round bye in singles, 13th seeded Siegel defeated Bayo Philips 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the second round. He picked up a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over Alex Lawson to advance to the round of 16 where he fell 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to 28th seeded John Richmond.
"Austin was in control and serving for the match in singles, but got a little nervous," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "In doubles, they had chances to get into the third set tiebreaker, but just missed it."
Gornet and Sean Donohue combined to defeat Ivan Kravtchenko and Daniel Markovine 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 in first round and lost to 14th-seeded Jared Hiltzik and Alex Jessee 6-4 6-4 in second round.
Gornet also received a bye in first round of singles. He went on to beat Kenneth Sabacinski 6-4, 6-4 before falling 6-1, 6-1 to Mihar Kumar in the round of 32.
