LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Brent McCombe scored the match-winning point as the University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Vanderbilt 4-3 on Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cardinals won the doubles point as Tvrtko Kujundzic and Joachim Lien defeated Brad Hambrick and Andrew Nisker 9-7 at the top seed. Cody Conley and Brent McCombe beat Bill and Dan McGugin 8-4 at No. 2, while Alex Sivertsen and Hazuan Hizan defeated Anders Oding and Josh Tarkoff at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles action, Vanderbilt's Andrew Nisker, ranked No. 34 in the nation in singles, defeated Tvrtko Kujundzic 6-4, 6-1. Lien and Sivertsen each scored singles points for the Cards at Nos. 2 and 3 respectively, both winning in straight sets. The Commodores' Peter Blach and Josh Tarkoff tied the match at 3 with straight set wins at Nos. 4 and 6.
At the five-seed, Vandy's Brad Hambrick, a Louisville native and graduate of Trinity High School, defeated Brent McCombe 6-2 in the first set. In the second set, McCombe battled back from a 5-4 deficit to win 8-6, forcing a third set which McCombe won 6-4, clinching the match for the Cards.
"This match felt satisfying for several reasons," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "First, beating an SEC team is always difficult, secondly, a late season win is important to the NCAA selection committee and finally, our intense doubles practice is paying off. Brent McCombe again showed why he is one of the most mentally tough players around. I believe this will give us another push upward and will give us momentum against Kentucky.
Vanderbilt falls to 9-14.
Louisville (17-7) travels to Lexington to take on No. 32 Kentucky on Tuesday, April 4 at 5:00 p.m. The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 47 in Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
