LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville's Austen Childs was named University of Louisville Sophomore Male Athlete of the Year at the Cardinal Athletics All-Sports Banquet Monday, April 27.

Childs (Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand) has followed his U of L Freshman of Athlete of the Year campaign with an impressive sophomore season. He has compiled a 27-12 overall record and is 18-4 as the Cards' top-seeded player. He is currently No. 28 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings and has been in the top 50 all season after reached a career high 26 in the preseason. Childs, is a two-time All-BIG EAST selection and the 2009 BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Year.

Childs has been successful in doubles, teaming with fellow sophomore Simon Childs (no relation) to register a 26-8 overall record and a 13-5 mark at No. 1. Childs and Childs are currently No. 27 in the ITA rankings and earned a program-best No. 6 national ranking earlier this season.

"I am very proud of Austen and thank the committee for choosing him as U of L Sophomore of the Year," said head men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma. "When you look at the landscape of an athletic department that produces Olympians, national champions, two dozen all-Americans and your player wins one of the biggest awards of the night in Sophomore of the Year, you're extremely proud - not only of your player - but of the department as a whole. I appreciate them acknowledging the great contribution Austen is making to our program and hopefully will continue in the NCAA championship."

The 21st ranked Cardinals (20-7) await the NCAA Men's Tennis Selection Show Tuesday evening as they look for their sixth NCAA tournament berth.
