The BIG EAST Conference announced that the University of Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer was named Freshman of the Year and Rex Ecarma was tabbed Coach of the Year. Senior Andrew Carter and freshman Albert Wagner joined Stiefelmeyer on the 12-player All-BIG EAST Conference team.

Stiefelmeyer (Vienna, Austria) was picked as the 2012 Freshman of the Year after making an immediate impact in the Cardinals' lineup this season. The newcomer from Vienna, Austria, recorded a 17-6 singles mark and a 13-13 doubles clip to lead Louisville to its third-straight BIG EAST Championship title. Stiefelmeyer was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after a 2-0 singles performance, including a key win to record the first point for the Cardinals in the championship year.

"Sebastian continues to earn honors," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "After being the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament, being named All-Conference and Freshman of the Year is amazing. I cannot remember the last time a freshman received all three of these honors in the same year."

Ecarma was chosen as BIG EAST Coach of the Year after leading his team to its third-straight BIG EAST title and fourth overall. The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 37 in the ITA poll and have earned victories over seven ranked opponents this season. With the BIG EAST title, U of L has earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament for the third straight season. This marks the third time Ecarma has been named BIG EAST Coach of the Year - he also earned the honor in 2006 and 2010.

"I am humbled by the Coach of the Year honor in a league with so many great coaches," said Ecarma. "I want to thank Rodrigo daSilva, who has partnered with me to build a program of excellence. We do our best to build a championship culture. I'd also like to thank volunteer assistant Matt Brewer, who has made his presence known, and Viktor Maksimcuk and Austen Childs who stayed for their fifth year and volunteered their time with the team. Finally, a great administration led by Tom Jurich, Julie Hermann and Kevin Miller, who have invested in the program with me. I am truly fortunately to be able to operate under such great leadership."

Carter (Greensboro, N.C.) posted 12 dual match victories playing mostly at Nos. 1 and 2. He is also one of six Cardinals to reach 20 overall wins on the season. He registered a win at No. 1 singles in the Cards' 4-0 victory over Georgetown in the BIG EAST quarterfinals. The senior teamed with Stiefelmeyer for a 13-5 overall record and reached No. 24 in the ITA double rankings and paired with Wagner to appear as high as No. 34 in doubles.

"I'm so happy that the league has chosen Andrew, Sebastian and Albert as all-conference team members," said Ecarma. "In a league as prestigious as the BIG EAST, this is quite an honor. Even though Andrew has been part of three league championships and is playing in his fourth NCAA tournament, this is the first time he was selected all-conference."

Wagner (Kuemmersbruck, Germany) registered a team-best 28-10 mark in singles and went 17-6 in dual matches playing mostly at Nos. 3 and 4. The freshman posted a win at No. 3 singles when Louisville's defeated host USF 4-2 in the BIG EAST championship match.

"I truly believe we have two of the top three freshmen in the conference with Albert and Sebastian," said Ecarma. "For them to be chosen in their first year bodes well for our team's future. Albert is a special player. He is so serious on the court and his results show that."
