The University of Louisville men's tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Conference championship as announced by the league office Monday. This marks the third straight season the Cards have earned the top seed in the tournament.

The Cardinals will open play Friday, April 29 at 9 a.m. when they face the winner of Thursday's match between No. 8 Connecticut and No. 9 Villanova.

Nine men's squads will compete for the conference titles April 28-May 1 in South Bend, Ind. The winners will receive the league's automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, set to begin May 13-15 on campus sites to be determined.

"I am happy the Big East Committee seeded us No. 1 in the Big East Men's Tennis Championships," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I feel they recognized the difficulty of our schedule, qualifying for the National Indoor Championships, and end of the year momentum. This is our third straight year being seeded No. 1 at the Championships but that doesn't guarantee anything. We understand that we need to be close to perfect for three straight days and cannot let our level drop. We have great respect for the depth of our conference and that we are playing on Notre Dame's home court. I believe that playing the toughest non-conference schedule in the country will help prepare us for our attempt to repeat as Champions."

The Cardinals are ranked No. 29 in the ITA Tennis Rankings and look to defend their 2010 title. UofL is led by the BIG EAST's highest ranked men's player, No. 15 Austen Childs. Childs was the 2010 BIG EAST Player of the Year and advanced to the NCAA singles championship match. Louisville also boasts the conference's highest ranked men's doubles pair in No. 17 Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk.
