For the second straight year, 15th ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team earned the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Conference tournament. The Cardinals will open play Friday, April 23 at 9 a.m., and will face the winner of Thursday's match between No. 8 seeded Connecticut and the No. 9 seed Villanova. The 2010 BIG EAST Conference championship will take place April 22-25 in South Bend, Ind.
"I am pleased that the Big East Committee recognized how tough our schedule was, our top 15 ranking," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Our team has been very consistent all year. I also recognize that our league teams are not intimidated by high rankings or No. 1 seeds. We were the No. 1 seed last year and did not make it to the finals. We plan to prepare for Friday's match as hard as we prepared for Tennessee, Ohio State or Baylor. We realize we have a bull's eye on our back and we will not overlook anyone."
U of L brings a 19-5 record into the tournament and is in the midst of a five-match winning streak. The Cardinals are led by junior Austen Childs who is No. 20 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Childs has posted an 24-10 overall record and is 18-4 as Louisville's top-seeded player. Junior Simon Childs is No. 78 in the ITA rankings with a 22-15 overall record and a 10-7 mark at the No. 2 spot.
Simon Childs teams with fellow junior Alejandro Calligari to form the 24th ranked team in the nation. Childs and Calligari have tallied a 9-3 record at the No. 1 doubles slot.
The Cardinals closed the regular season with a 6-1 win over Middle Tennessee, completing an undefeated year at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center with 10 home wins. U of L has also defeated two BIG EAST teams during the regular season, topping USF 4-3 on April 2, and Notre Dame 5-2 on April 10.
