The University of Louisville men's tennis team will wrap up the regular season at Notre Dame on April 14.
"Even though we have the best national ranking in the BIG EAST Conference, the winner of the match tomorrow in South Bend will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We would like to be the No. 1 seed for the fourth year in a row. Notre Dame is a veteran team with a lot of experience and we have one of the youngest starting lineups in the country. I have really enjoyed the development of these young guys. The senior class is very hot right now."
The Cardinals (16-7) enter the match ranked No. 38 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings. Louisville is in the midst of a seven-match win streak and completed a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Kentucky and Wright State on April 5.
Freshman Albert Wagner has produced a team-best 17-4 dual match record and is 26-9 overall. Fellow freshman Michael Lippens is 26-8 and 13-5 in dual action. Senior Andrew Carter and Wagner have teamed for a 10-5 mark in doubles, playing mostly at No. 1, while senior Robert Hall has paired with freshman Sebastian Stiefelmeyer for a 9-5 record playing mostly at No. 2.
Notre Dame (17-7) is one spot behind Louisville at No. 39 in the national rankings. The Irish have won five straight matches and are coming off of a 4-3 upset of Texas A&M in College Station.
Greg Andrews is currently No. 64 in the ITA singles rankings and the Irish have a pair of doubles teams in the top 100. Casey Watt and Niall Fitzgerald are No. 66 while Fitzgerald teams with Spencer Talmadge as the 87th ranked team in the nation.
Louisville holds an 8-5 lead in the series between the teams and has won the last six meetings, including a 4-2 victory to claim the BIG EAST Conference title on May 1, 2011.
Following Saturday's match, the Cards will prepare for the BIG EAST Conference Championship which will be held April 19-22 in Tampa, Fla.
