Louisville junior Austen Childs earned the season's first BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week honor following dominating weekend performances. Childs went 1-0 in the No. 1 singles spot and also earned two wins in the No. 3 doubles spot, leading Louisville to its first ITA Kickoff Regional title in school history.
"The Florida State regional that we won was arguably the strongest regional among all the national Kick-Off regionals," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Austen was undefeated. He played with tremendous intensity and led our team to our first National Indoor Team Round of 16 appearance."
Childs, the 2008-09 BIG EAST Player of the Year, ranks 46th in the ITA NCAA Division I standings. Against LSU's No. 97 Sebastian Carisson on Jan. 29, the New Zealand native won 6-4, 7-5. He also teamed with freshman Chidi Gabriel in the No. 3 doubles spot to earn Louisville's lone doubles win against No. 29 LSU. Childs paired with Chidi again versus No. 32 Wisconsin on Jan. 30 to help secure the doubles point with an 8-6 victory.
Childs has a compiled a 3-0 mark as the team's No. 1 player and a 9-6 overall record so far this season.
The 16th ranked Cardinals (5-0) are back in action Feb. 5 when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on No. 37 Minnesota.
