LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The University of Louisville men's tennis team will play host to Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m. and Toledo at 6 p.m. on January 30 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Admission is free.
"This will be a challenging test in playing two quality teams back to back," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "This will stretch the players and hopefully be a growing lesson. We will be led by Alex Gornet, who is 'on fire' after the National Indoor Kick-Off and also Chris Simich who had won 15 of his last 16 in single and doubles combined. We hope fans can stop by and see the 30 minute doubles point from 6-6:30 then head over to the basketball game."
The Cardinals (3-1) enter Thursday's matches ranked No. 47 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team rankings. Michael Lippens leads the team with a 20-5 overall singles record. The junior is also a perfect 3-0 in dual matches and has won eight straight singles matches. Sophomore Alex Gornet has won his last five singles matches and registered a point in Louisville's 4-1 loss at No. 5 Ohio State on Jan. 26. Sophomore Jeffrey Brown carries a team-best 14-6 overall mark in doubles.
The Cards edged Middle Tennessee 4-3 in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 25. The match came down to court five where junior Chris Simich suffered a 6-3 first set loss, but battled back to defeat Victor Hoang 6-5 (7-4), 6-4 to seal the win. Louisville then played fifth-ranked Ohio State in the finals of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend and fell 4-1 for their first loss of the season. In that match, sophomore Alex Gornet picked up a singles win for the Cardinals.
Following this Thursday's matches, the Cardinals will return to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Feb. 5 when they play host to North Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
