University of Louisville junior Chris Simich was named the American Athletic Conference's first Male Tennis Player of the Week on Jan. 21.
"I am so happy for Chris," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "He is a warrior for us and is usually under the radar. He is well deserving of this accolade. After two weekends, he was 14-0 overall. I am very confident in him."
This marks the first weekly honor for Simich who led Louisville to a pair of shutout victories and going 7-0 in both singles and doubles overall during his first dual match competitions of the spring. The junior from Auckland, New Zealand began his spring at the UCF Quad Tournament, going 5-0 in singles with victories over players from UCF, Indiana, TCU, The Citadel, and Rice. He also paired with Albert Wagner to go 5-0 in doubles play during the spring tournament. In dual matches the following week against Morehead State and Murray State, Simich helped the Cardinals to victories with a pair of singles wins at the No. 4 position and two doubles wins alongside Wagner. He improved his singles record to 13-5 and carries a team-best 15-3 mark in doubles.
The Cardinals (2-0) will travel to Columbus, Ohio to face Middle Tennessee in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Feb. 25. Ohio State and Denver will face off in the other first round match. The winners will meet on Feb. 26 to decide who will move on to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship which will be held Feb. 14-17 at Texas A&M.
