The 20th ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team will continue dual match play against No. 62 ranked East Tennessee State University on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"We are playing probably the best 'under the radar' team in the country," said U of L head tennis coach Rex Ecarma. "They are extremely talented throughout their lineup and are very well coached. When a team wins as many conference championships as they have, they are not going to be intimidated by a team ranked No. 20. They have played in quite a few NCAA tournaments so they are also used to playing big events. So needless to say we have are hands full and hopefully we'll be ready to play at a high level."
The Cardinals swept their dual match opening doubleheader against IUPUI and Murray State last Saturday, giving them a 2-0 record. Led by juniors Alejandro Calligari and Simon Childs, the Cards won every set played, earning a 7-0 win in each match.
Louisville, set to take on their first ranked opponent of the season, has three players among the top singles rankings in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Team Rankings with junior Austen Childs at No. 46, sophomore Andrew Carter at No. 81, and Simon Childs at No. 84. The Cards also have two doubles tandems among the top ranking teams with Childs and Childs at No. 14 and Calligari and sophomore Robert Hall at No. 33.
The Cardinals have no easy task on Thursday, however, as East Tennessee State also has three singles players and two doubles teams in the top rankings. Jesus Bandres is No. 51, Grega Teraz is No. 82 and Charles Bottoni stands in at No. 89 in the singles rankings. Ofir Weingraub and Daniel Isaza are No. 39 while Bandres and Xander Gille have teamed for a No. 52 ranking.
