The University of Louisville men's tennis team will open the 2013 dual match season at No. 34 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings. In addition, sophomore Sebastian Stiefelmeyer is No. 82 in singles while sophomore Albert Wagner and freshman Alex Gornet stand in at No. 31 in the doubles rankings.
"I think the rankings are fair and a good place to start for us," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I am happy that Sebastian got ranked, as well and Albert and Alex along with our team. We play 18 teams that are nationally-ranked in the top 75 of tennis which will give us a lot of opportunities to go higher. It's really going to be exciting for the players and fans."
Stiefelmeyer, (Vienna, Austria), posted a 9-4 singles record in the fall after being ranked No. 70 in the preseason rankings. He was selected BIG EAST Player of the Month for September after finishing runner-up in the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational. Last season, Stiefelmeyer was the 2012 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year after posting a 26-11 singles record and an 18-6 showing in dual matches. Stiefelmeyer was named the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Conference Championship.
Wagner (Kuemmersbruck, Germany) and Gornet (Louisville, Ky.) teamed for a 4-1 record in the fall and reached the semifinals of USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship.
The Cardinals will travel to Boca Raton, Fla., for the Florida Atlantic Invitational Jan. 4-6 before opening the dual match season against Nebraska on Jan. 13 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
