LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - University of Louisville men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma has announce that Chidi Gabriel will join the Cardinals and be immediately eligible to compete in the 2010 spring season.

Gabriel, who hails from Piscataway, N.J., is the top-rated player in New Jersey and was ranked as high as No. 47 in the nation. He reached the semifinals of the 2009 Coca Cola ITF tournament and was ranked as high as No. 47 in the nation in 2009.

"I am very pleased to announce the addition of Chidi Gabriel to our team," said Ecarma. "Chidi is a good tennis player and a super athlete. He is about 5-9 but can dunk a basketball comfortably with both hands. We have had such great success developing these types of athletes to be nationally ranked college tennis players. He reminds me of former tennis star Brent McCombe. He has ridiculous speed and a powerful forehand so he is bringing these types of weapons to the table. I still feel he is raw in some areas and we believe we can teach him to improve quickly. He is a hungry and humble athlete which fits with the personality of this team."

The Cardinals will open the 2010 season January 6-10 at the Las Vegas Invitational.
