Complete Day Two Results
LOUISVILLE, Ky. The University of Louisville men's tennis team posted seven wins and advanced two doubles teams to the `A' semifinals while junior Luis Elizondo reached the flight `A' singles finals.
"We followed up a good first day with another good day," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "That is important to establish performance consistency."
The Cards picked up two wins in the `A' doubles division to start the day. The duo of sophomore Jeffrey Brown and junior Michael Lippens defeated Indiana's Sam Monette and Stefan Lugonjic 8-4 while Elizondo and senior Amaury Derognat teamed to beat Morehead State's Gabriel Ruiz and Ji Hoon Heo 8-3.
"Jeff and Mike scored a nice win against a very good Indiana team and earned a spot in the semis," said Ecarma. "I am pleased that two of the four doubles teams left in the tournament are Cardinals."
In singles action, Elizondo bested IU's Lugonjic 6-1, 6-2 and Brown battled to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen to pit the teammates against each other in an `A' semifinal match. Elizondo prevailed 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the finals where he will face Indiana's Monette who had beaten Lippens 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
"Jeffrey Brown played very well in his win over Nils Ellefsen of Kentucky," said Ecarma. "It was a hard-fought match from the first point on. Mike took the No. 1 player from Indiana to a long three-set match. Luis and Jeff had to play in an all Louisville semifinal where Luis earned his second consecutive LIT final."
The Louisville Winter Invitational will conclude Sunday with doubles semifinals starting at 9 a.m.
