The University of Louisville men's tennis team went 8-1 on the first day of the Louisville Winter Invitational Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Two doubles teams and three singles players will compete in Saturday's quarterfinal matches.
"We went 8-1 today against some tough competition. I am really proud of the effort and depth of our team right now. Tomorrow's quarterfinals will feature Luis, Jeffrey, and Michael against players from Kentucky and Indiana. This will be a great day for the fans to come out."
The tournament kicked off with one round of doubles. Sophomore Jeffrey Brown and junior Michael Lippens teamed for an 8-4 victory over Purdue's Matt Bouggy and Lucas Dages. Brown and Lippens will face Stefan Lugonjic and Sam Monette of Indiana Saturday at 9 a.m.
In singles action, Lippens posted with a 6-0, 6-0 first round win over Vincennes' Garrett Mandrell and went on to beat Morehead State's Gabriel Ruiz 6-1, 6-2.
Brown picked up a firt round win with a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Campbellsville's Sebastian Marot and advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Middle Tennessee's Ettore Zito 7-6(1), 5-7, 6-3.
Elizondo topped Illinois State's Muddappa Appanervanda,6-7, 6-3, 6-3 and Purdue's Lucas Dages of Purdue 6-3, 6-4.
Derognat defeated Longwood's Harry Kelleher 6-4, 6-1 before falling 6-4, 6-4 to Kentucky's Charles Minc in the second round.
The 2013 Louisville Winter Invitational will continue Saturday with doubles matches starting at 9 a.m. and singles play following at 10:30 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
