ANN ARBOR, Mich. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional hosted by the University of Michigan.

In the Thursday's qualifying matches, top-seeded senior Octavian Nicodim defeated Western Michigan's Jeff French 6-3, 6-2. Nicodim will play Minnesota's Nick Idlefsen Friday.

Sophomore Stefan Naughton Aaron Phillips of Indiana State 7-6(2), 6-2 in the first round and will face Dayton's Tom Murphy on Friday.

Nicolas Houard fell to Indiana's Dmytro Ishtuganov 6-2, 6-4.

"This is a good start for Octavian and Stefan," said head coach Rex Ecarma. "Octavian was the number one seed. There is pressure that comes along with being the top seed and Octavian handled it very well, playing a dynamite second set. Stefan played one of the better Indiana State players and took care of him in straight sets while showing flashes of brilliant tennis. Unfortunately, we didn't go three for three. Nicolas is dealing with an injury and didn't have the mobility he normally has, but still played a competitive match with Indiana."

The Cardinals will continue play on Friday.
