MEMPHIS - -
Sophomore Albert Wagner and freshman Alex Gornet advanced to the open doubles quarterfinals and Gornet won his first round singles match as the University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional with four wins Friday at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
"This was a great day for Alex Gornet going a perfect 4-0 in a big event like the Ohio Valley Regional Championships," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "He and Albert are very similar in the sense that they are very serious and intense on the court. They understand each other and it shows. Their first round match was a tough one with one of the players ranked in the top six in the nation in doubles last season. They followed it up with a win against a veteran and fifth-seeded Tennessee team. I thought there might be a slight letdown in the third match and they fell behind 0-2 the reeled off 8 straight games. Alex finished the day with a solid singles win. Both these players are hot. We will try to continue this tomorrow."
Wagner and Gornet opened doubles play with a 9-7 win over Kentucky in the round of 64. They went on to beat the draw's fifth-seeded duo, Tennessee's Jaryd Chaplin and Edward Jones 8-5. Wagner and Gornet's third doubles match of the day resulted in an 8-2 victory over Xavier's Brandon MacDonald and Zach Mueck to reach Saturday's quarterfinal match.
In singles action, Gornet picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over East Tennessee's Roger Ordeig in the round of 128.
