The University of Louisville men's tennis team is off to an impressive start as five players advanced to the quarterfinals of their draws and all three doubles teams went undefeated Friday in the Louisville Fall Invitational at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cards started the day by winning all three doubles matches. In flight `A' senior Robert Rotaru and sophomore Alejandro Calligari picked up an 8-4 win over UT-Martin's Andrey Yesipov and Alfredo Krywacz. Also in the `A' flight, freshman Sumit-Prakash Gupta and sophomore Viktor Maksimcuk defeated Eastern Illinois' Jordan Nestrud and Vuk Milicevic 8-6. Freshman Adam Donaldson and senior Tim Barnoud registered an 8-5 win over Wright State's Landon Neuman and Mikhel Kuusmasi in the `B' Flight.
In singles action, Maksimcuk, Rotaru and Calligari advanced to the quarterfinals of the `A' flight. Maksimcuk beat Eastern Illinois' Jordan Nestrud 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 and went on to defeat Jared Miller of Toledo 6-3, 7-5 in the second round. Rotaru posted a pair of three-set wins with victories over Western Kentucky's Thomas Krug 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-0 and Illinois State's Timon Reichelt 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Calligari topped Wright State's Nick Camilleri 6-2, 6-3 in the first round and Toledo's Jared Miller 6-3, 7-5 in the second.
Andrew Carter made to the `B' Flight quarterfinals, with wins over UT-Martin's Stewart McRae (6-2, 6-4) and Cleveland State's (Ryan Hamning (7-6, 6-2). Barnoud defeated Toledo's Jay Miller 6-1, 6-3 in the first round and then fell to Eastern Illinois' Vuk Milicevic 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Gupta fell to Cleveland State's Yannick Goossens 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in his first round match.
Donaldson will represent the Cardinals in the `D' flight quarterfinals after beating Toledo's Robbie McCallum 6-4, 6-4 and Cleveland State's 6-1, 6-1.
"I was very impressed with the players' effort and concentration today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They won many tight matches that could have gone either way and found the right adjustment to make at the right time. The guys looked confident and played confident and I hope it continues tomorrow."
Doubles play will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
