LOUISVILLE, Ky. - -
The University of Louisville men's tennis team advanced four players to the `A' and `B' flight singles finals and two doubles teams to the semifinals at the conclusion of Saturday's play at the Louisville Fall Invitational.
"How can I not be happy today with these players," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Alex and Chris won their quarter and semifinal matches and will play against each other for the `A' Division Singles Championship. Van and Jeffrey made it an all-Louisville final in the `B' doubles as well. We also have chances to win the `A' and `B' divisions in doubles. I will sleep tonight with a smile on my face."
In flight `A' singles action, sophomore Chris Simich was ahead 4-0 in his quarterfinal match against Kentucky's Brett Johnson when Johnson retired sending Simich to the semifinals where he defeated Austin Peay's Sean Bailey 6-4, 6-3. Louisville freshman Alex Gornet picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kentucky's Maks Gold in the quarterfinals. He went on to beat Tennessee Tech's Alejandro Augusto 6-2, 7-6(4) to set up an all-Louisville final on Sunday.
"Alex defeated a good UK player and local rival in the quarters," said Ecarma. "He is looking to become the second freshman in U of L history to win the `A' title; and Chris wants to better his showing from last year when he lost to teammate Michael Lippens in the final."
In flight `B' singles, sophomore Van Damrongsri defeated Bluefield State's Piotr Kruk 6-1, 6-4 to reach the semifinals where he bested Victor Hoang of Arkansas 6-0, 6-4. Freshman Jeffrey Brown picked up a 6-2, 6-3 quarterfinal win over Arkansas' Santiago Munoz and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over West Alabama's Adam Drysdale to complete another all-Louisville final.
The doubles team of Simich and Gornet advanced to the `A' division semifinals after Kentucky's Beck Pennington and Brett Johnson withdrew from the tournament. Simich and Gornet will face the winner of the match between Tennessee Tech and Bluefield State. The Cardinal duo of junior Amaury Derognat and Jeffrey Brown defeated Bluefield State's Niklas Sparr and Vlad Catlan 8-5 to reach Sunday's semifinal where they will face Santiago Munoz and Pete Thomason of Arkansas.
The doubles semifinals will take place Sunday at 9 a.m. with the finals following. All singles finals will follow the completion of doubles play.
