Men's Tennis Off to a Stellar Start at Louisville Fall Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team advanced eight singles players and four doubles teams to the quarterfinals of the Louisville Fall Invitational Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The tournament will resume Saturday with doubles action starting at 9 a.m. "We believed that we prepared them very well, but when you're playing six players who have never played for Louisville and five who have never played in a college match, you never know what's going to happen," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Starting the tournament with 14 straight wins is a phenomenal effort from these players. We basically dominated all four of the divisions is a tribute to how hard these guys work and how hungry these players are. It's the beginning of a new era for Louisville tennis." The Cards went undefeated in all four of their matches in the opening round of doubles. In flight `A,' freshman Van Damrongsri and senior Adam Donaldson cruised to an 8-1 win over Austin Peay's Aleksas Tverijonas and Sean Bailey while the freshman duo of Michael Lippens and Chris Simich edged Wright State's Hayden Joblin and Jami Clark 9-7. Sophomores Dante Terenzio and Jonathan Kuhn took their `B' flight first round with an 8-5 victory over Cleveland State's Ben Shkylar and Jay Jones. Freshmen Ross Nigro and Brad Merchant teamed to beat Kenyon's Andrew Herring and Jake Huber 8-3. In singles action, the Cardinals won 18 of 20 matches with Damrongsri, Lippens, Terenzio and Simich each picking up a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinals of the `A' flight. Gupta and Nigro reached the `B' quarterfinals.
