COLLEGE STATION, Texas - -
The University of Louisville's Austen Childs and Simon Childs completed their season with a 7-6(3), 6-4 loss to Middle Tennessee's Robert McKenzie and John Peers Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
"Middle Tennessee did a good job at holding serve which is always advantageous in winning a doubles match," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "John Peers controlled the net as well. Simon lost confidence in his returns and Austen was broken twice but we still had the chance to win this match. We had beaten this team before and felt we had a good draw but postseason is a new type of season which is something my players have to learn. We put ourselves in these elite events but our best tennis has not shown up. These guys have to learn to play with no fear and have total faith in their ability. We are going to work extremely hard this summer. Childs and Childs did some very nice things this year, being ranked sixth in the nation and reaching the National Indoor quarterfinals, but to improve on these type of achievements there needs to be more improvement."
The sophomore duo of Austen Childs (Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand) and Simon Childs (Hillington, England) teamed for a 26-9 overall record in 2009 and were at 13-5 at the No. 1 position. Childs and Childs entered the NCAA championship ranked No. 25 after reaching a program-best sixth in the nation on February 19. They were also selected to play in the NCAA doubles championship as freshmen in 2008.
