The University of Louisville men's tennis team took its first step towards winning another BIG EAST Championship on Friday when the No.2 seed Louisville swept the No. 7 seed Georgetown 4-0 in the first round of the 2012 BIG EAST Tennis Championship in Tampa, Fla. The Cardinals will advance to play No. 3 St. John's on Saturday at Noon.

"We made some big adjustments in the way we played doubles and it worked well today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I think it can work even better the more we use this strategy. Everyone played solidly in singles and were in control of their matches. Lippens, as usual, gave us our first point in singles. Michael is a very reliable player. Then the seniors, Hall and Carter, closed out the match. These guys stayed really composed in their singles matches and closed out the match with poise. Tomorrow we play probably the biggest hitting team in the conference and have to mentally prepare for that type of speed."

The Cardinals opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. Freshman Sebastian Steifelmeyer and senior Robert Hall dropped only two games in an 8-2 victory over Georgetown's Alex Tropiano and Andy Dottino at No. 2. Clinching the doubles point with a 8-5 win at No.3 was the duo of senior Adam Donaldson and freshman Michael Lippens over Casey Distaso and Charlie Caris.

In singles, Robert Hall and Michael Lippens added wins to move the score to 3-0 in favor of the Cards. At No. 5, Hall defeated Brian Ward 6-2, 6-3. Lippens rolled at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-1 over Shane Korber. Senior Andrew Carter clinched the match for the Cards at the top spot with a tough 6-4, 6-4 win over Andrew Bruhn.

The Cards advance to the next round to take on St. John's on Saturday at noon at the Varsity Courts.
