TAMPA, Fla. - - The top-seeded University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated eighth-seeded Villanova 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Men's Tennis Championship at the USF Courts.
The Cards opened the match with doubles wins at the one and three positions to take a 1-0 lead. The No. 82 ranked duo of Viktor Maksimcuc and Simon Childs defeated Alex Lesser and Zack Siegler 8-2 at the top seed while Alejandro Calligari and Robert Hall teamed to beat Mike Taylor and Alex Hanno 8-4 at No. 3.
In singles action, Louisville picked up straight set wins at Nos. 2, 4, and 6 to complete the win. Maksimcuk, No. 79 in the ITA singles rankings, beat Lesser 6-0, 6-1 at the two-spot. Robert Rotaru topped Siegler 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6, adding to the lead. Alejandro Calligari clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Taylor at No. 4. Moments after that match finished, Simon Childs wrapped up the No. 3 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Alenik.
"Our focus today was to be extremely efficient," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I asked the players to really organize their footwork so that they can be in better position to the ball, which helps them become more consistent and increases their confidence, and they did it. In these circumstances, being an outdoor tournament and dealing with the elements, you do not want to have a high level of unforced errors or its going to be extremely problematic. We had a few guys that held serve in singles and doubles so that is very promising."
The 23rd ranked Cardinals (19-6) will face the winner of Marquette and DePaul Saturday at 9 a.m. in the BIG EAST Semifinals.
