The No. 38 ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to BIG EAST rival No. 39-ranked Notre Dame 5-2 Saturday afternoon in Notre Dame, Ind. The Cardinals dropped the doubles point and despite winning No. 1 and No. 4 singles, U of L fell in two other three set matches.
"We brought our 'B' game today instead of our 'A' game and we were still in the match," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We started out well in doubles, but faded. Our freshmen all had chances and Sebastian and Michael finished well and won their matches. Eebasitan defeated a player who qualified for the last two NCAA singles championships at No. 1. Albert and Luis played very well and won their second sets, but played below par in the third. It was a very raucous crowd on their senior day. We can play much better than that and hopefully we can see this level at the BIG EAST Championships."
Notre Dame, which has now won six straight matches, moves to 18-7 with a 3-1 BIG EAST mark. U of L, which had a six match winning streak snapped, moves to 15-9 and 0-1 in league play.
U of L's Sebastian Steifelmeyer and Robert Hall fell 8-4 first at No. 2 doubles to Greg Andrews and Spencer Talmadge. The #66 pair of Casey Watt and Niall Fitzgerald took Andrew Carter and Albert Wagner down 8-3 to clinch the point. The senior pair of Sumit Gupta and Adam Donaldson went down swinging 8-3 in the final match to finish.
Down 1-0 after doubles, the Cards evened the score when Michael Lippens won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 over ND's Billy Pecor. The Irish answered with a win at No. 4, as Niall Fitzgerald beat Robert Hall 6-1, 7-5 to go up 2-1. The Cards tied at two, when Sebastian Stiefelmeyer beat Casey Watt in a three-set comeback battle, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Notre Dame took the No. 3 slot with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 three set win over Albert Wagner. #64 Greg Andrews clinched the match for the Irish with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Andrew Carter. U of L's Luis Elizondo dropped his first set 5-7 then roared back to win 6-0, only to fall 6-3 in the third to Blas Moros at the No. 6 slot.
The Cardinals head into the BIG EAST Championships April 19 in Tampa, Fla . as they look to defend their title of a year ago. U of L beat Notre Dame 4-2 for the league crown last year in South Bend.
