The No. 14 University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Virginia Commonwealth 5-1 Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"I am extremely pleased with today's win," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Their coach Paul Kostin, someone I highly respect, complimented our team, saying that we are capable of making a deep run in the NCAA tournament. Our team has regained some momentum and a grueling week of practice really helped."
The Cards won at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take the first point of the match. The 25th ranked duo of Simon Childs and Alejandro Calligari defeated Thibaut Charron and Tim Johannsen 8-3 at the top seed, while Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk teamed to beat Kristzian Krocsko and Camill Salomon 8-0 at No. 2.
Louisville posted wins at Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5 en route to the 5-0 win. No. 30 Austen Childs upset No. 25 Charron 7-6, 6-1 at No. 1. No. 76 Simon Childs topped Krocsko 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Calligari beat Wennakoski 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 at the four-spot and Hall picked up a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Salomon at No. 5.
VCU's single point came on court six, where Filip Svensson edged Chidi Gabriel 7-5, 7-6.
U of L (16-5) will travel to South Bend, Ind., to take on BIG EAST Conference foe Notre Dame April 11.
