Tulsa, Okla. - - The 19th ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to host Tulsa 5-2, on Saturday afternoon from the indoor courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Louisville drops to 16-4 on the season, while Tulsa improves to 16-7.
"Tulsa jumped all over us in doubles, they really outplayed us in that aspect of the match, Simon Childs played one his best matches of the year and Viktor Maksimcuk played with a lot of heart," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Arnau Brugues is the number one player in the country and really showed why today. Alejandro had the match in hand, but let it slip away. At five and six, we just lost it at the end. We hope to have a good bounce back against Oklahoma State on Monday. "
Tulsa swept the Cardinals in all three doubles positions. James Seagraves and Alberto Sottocorno upsetting 11th-ranked Austen Childs and Simon Childs, 8-6, in the top flight. Philip Stephens and Ashley Watling teamed up to beat Tim Barnoud and Viktor Maksimcuk, 8-2, in No. 2 doubles, and Arnau Brugues and Marko Ballok topped Robert Hall and Robert Rotaru, 8-3, in the No. 3 position.
The Cardinals got singles points at Nos. 2 and 3. Maksimcuk outlasted Sottocomo 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 at the two seed. Simon Childs picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at the three spot.
In singles, No. 40 ranked Austen Childs fell to top-ranked Brugues 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 1 slot. Stephens defeated Alejandro Calligari 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4. Watling picked up a 7-6, 6-1 win over Hall at the five spot and Ballok defeated Andrew Carter 7-5, 6-4.
