MONTGOMERY, Ala. - - The 12th ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Oregon 4-0 to opened the 2006 Blue Gray Collegiate Tennis Classic. The Cards (13-2) extend their winning streak to 10 matches.

"This was the right way to start a grueling tournament," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We played efficiently and closed out the match at the first possible opportunity. The four players who won started well and finished strong."

Rain in the area delayed competition, forcing the teams began the match by playing singles. Louisville's No. 2 seed Damar Johnson defeated Thomas Bieri 6-3 in the first set and was up 5-0 before Bieri retired due to injury. Jakob Gustafsson picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win over Arron Spencer at No. 3. Jeremy Clark beat Mike Myrhed 6-3, 6-0 at the four-spot. Nicolas Houard rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vladimir Pino at No. 6. Because the Cards notched the four points necessary to win, the doubles matches were not played.

"This was the first time we have won a first round match in the Blue Gray Classic and we hope this is the start of something good," said Ecarma.

Louisville (13-2) will face No. 39 Tulsa in the quarterfinals Friday at 1 p.m.
