LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 30 University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Northwestern 5-2 Wednesday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards have now won five straight matches and improve to 9-4 on the season, while the Wildcats drop to 7-4.

"That was our fifth doubles point in a row and now it's our fifth win in a row," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "It's amazing to see the influence of the doubles point in a tennis match where there are actually seven points to be won. The guys really fought hard, especially the middle and bottom of the lineup. Andrew Carter was simply amazing today beating, in my opinion their best player 6-0, 6-0. A score like that is rare in college tennis - especially against a player of that caliber. It was an incredible effort, incredible focus."

The Cards opened the match by taking the doubles point. The duo of Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Robert Hall topped Spencer Wolf and Eric Spector 8-3 at the two-spot while the 34th ranked pair of Andrew Carter and Albert Wagner defeated Raleigh Smith and Alex Pasareanu 8-2 at the top seed to clinch the match. Carter and Wagner are now 7-0 on the season. On court three, Sumit Gupta and Michael Lippens rallied from an early 3-1 deficit to beat Sidarth Balaji and Chris Jackman 8-7 (6-4).

In singles action, Carter cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Balaji at No. 2. Hall added to the lead with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Nikhil Jayashankar. Hall's 6-4, 6-1 win over Smith on court five clinched the win for the Cards.

Lippens defeated Pasareanu 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at the four-spot to increase the lead to 5-0.

Northwestern picked up its first point of the match on court three, where Smith topped Wagner 6-3, 6-1 The top seed featured a battle between Stiefelmeyer and Wolf which resulted in a 7-6 (18-16), 7-5 win for Wolf.

"I really like the fact that different guys won their matches," said Ecarma. "I think when a team can win big matches at different spots in the lineup, it really gives you the hope that this team can be very good. We've got the wind behind our back right now, winning five in a row and we hope the momentum carries into the weekend when we play Washington and Tulsa in the Great Northwestern Shootout."
