No. 13 Men's Tennis Tops Old Dominion 7-0 in Season Opener
Cards sweep doubles and singles against Old Dominion to open the 2011 season with a win

NORFOLK, Va. - - The 13th ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 2011 dual match season with a 7-0 victory over host Old Dominion Sunday.

"To start our dual match season on the road against a dangerous team is risky," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "In 2006, we were ranked 12th in the country and got demolished here. Our experience helped us and Simon Childs and Sumit Gupta were a great spark for us in doubles. Not dropping a set in singles was an accomplishment. I attribute that to playing in the Rainbow Warrior Classic which gave us very good preseason match play. Sumit Gupta was our MVP today."

The Cardinals won all three doubles matches to gain the first point. Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk defeated Tobias Fanselow and Krzysztof Muzalewski 8-5 at the top seed. Simon Childs and Sumit-Prakash Gupta topped Benjamin Chomette and Fahoum Fahoum 8-1 at No. 2. Alejandro Calligari and Robert Hall claimed the No. 3 spot with an 8-5 decision over Albert Ochagavia and Alfredo Rodriguez.

Louisville swept the singles in straight sets en route to their season-opening win. Eighth ranked Austen Childs defeated Fanselow 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. Maksimcuk, No. 75 in the ITA singles rankings, topped Chomette 6-3, 6-3. No. 98 Simon Childs beat Muzalewski 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. Hall picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Albert Ochagavia at No. 4. Calligari defeated Fahoum 6-3, 7-5 at the five-spot. Andrew Carter beat Rodriguez 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.

 

 

U of L (1-0) will play its home opener Friday, Jan. 21 against North Carolina State at 4 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
